Besides a physical exam from your local doctor, you can have x-rays or ultrasound pictures of the vein taken by a physician who specialzies in vein therapy to locate the root problem and if it warrants strong action. However, it is suggested you discuss your health issue with a doctor in person who specializes in vein treatment or phlebology. You need to fully understand which treatment choices are best for your particular condition. In these type of cases, each case involving varicose veins is not the same.

Some popular and successful treatments include:

Sclerotherapy

One of the most common treatments for either spider veins and varicose veins is Sclerotherapy. This procedure has the doctor injecting a solution inside the vein which makes the vein walls swell up, join each other, and close it. This halts the blood flow and the vein changes into scar tissue. In a few weeks, the vein should fade away. Some items the vein will require multiple treatments.

Upon completion the correct way, Sclerotherapy can be extremely effective. Often times patients will notice an improvement. Microsclerotherapy, a more recent technique, uses special solutions and injection methods to improve the chances of spider vein removal. Unlike older methods, Sclerotherapy does not call for patients to be under anesthesia, and may be accomplished in the doctor's office.

Possible side effects include:

  • Temporary small skin sores, reddish spots, bruises, and stinging, where the injection was made
  • Brown lines near the treated vein that eventually vanish

The treated vein may also worsen or grow into lumps of clotted blood. This is not uncommon or that alarming. Applying heat and taking aspirin or antibiotics should reduce inflammation. The Lumps of clotted blood can be drained

Laser Surgery

Another great technology involves laser use which consistently corrects spider veins in the legs. Laser surgery transmits powerful bursts of light to the vein. This process makes the vein fade away slowly and vanish. Lasers are very direct and accurate. Many skin types and pigments are able to be treated safely and effectively with laser surgery.

Most patients prefer laser surgery due it not requiring an incision or needles. Although, once the laser touches the skin, the patient will experience a heat sensation which can be painful. Laser vein treatment procedure can last up to 20 minutes. Depending on the extent of the veins, multiple treatments are common to remove spider veins. Patients are generally able to go back to regular activity following treatment, which is the case with Sclerotherapy. However, if a patient has spider veins measuring more than 1/12 of an inch, laser therapy would not be the method of choice.

Laser surgery side effects include:

  • Temporary redness or swelling of the skin right after the treatment
  • Skin discoloration which will vanish in sixty days, sometimes earlier.

Endovenous Techniques

The endovenous method (laser or radiofrequency) for treating deep varicose veins in the legs is a recent successful breakthrough in treating veins. This technique is not very invasive and can be administered in a doctor’s office.

The procedure involves the use of a catheter into the vein and it transmits via radiofrequency or laser energy that diminishes and shuts close the vein wall. As a result, healthy veins near the closed vein give way to normal blood flow. Shortly thereafter, pain or any symptoms from the varicose vein become better.

Possible side effect is slight bruising.

TIPP

Transilluminated Powered Phlebectomy is a surgical procedure that is minimally invasive. From transillumination, the doctor can easily locate with precision where the affected vein is and take it out. It is also evident when the vein has been fully removed, relieves the requirement for numerous incisions at a specific area.

This procedure can trim the number of incisions down by up to 70%, making it a much more soothing and successful treatment for the patient. The session is generally done in less than an hour, and the use of a local anesthetic makes the process easier. Patients can generally go back to regular activities within two to three days.

Wonderfully informative hub about a common problem! Women are the most self-conscious about spider veins - after pregnancies. Blogging this on over to my healing blog so others can get informed too, thanks!

I think it is becoming more prevalent with the food sold in common grocery stores and less active lifestyles. I witnessed a lot of it in folks in Phoenix. Thanks for the comment
